5 Summer Maintenance Tips to Keep Porta Potties Fresh

Construction sites, outdoors events, farms, campgrounds…summer is the busiest time for all of them. Seasonal projects and outings of all types across Alberta and Saskatchewan are already in full swing. Longer days and warmer weather make it easier to get work done and bring people together outside.

But, that same summer heat can create a major challenge for portable toilets…

Rising temperatures cause bacterial growth to accelerate inside the holding tank. Heat can also speed up the breakdown of the deodorizing chemicals used, causing liquid levels to evaporate faster than normal. The result is often stronger odours, especially when units are heavily used or sitting directly in the sun.

There’s good news though: Fresh, usable units are absolutely possible in 30°C weather.

With the right planning and a reliable portable toilet service schedule, you can improve worker morale, protect your guests’ experience, and keep your job site running smoothly!

Sanatec Environmental provides, pumps, and maintains portable toilet units for all types of events, job sites, and other seasonal operations. Here are five summer maintenance tips to help keep your porta potties fresh!

1. Strategic Positioning: Beat the Heat

One of the most important portable toilet variables is where you place it. It matters so much more than people realize!

Whenever possible, place your units in a shaded area, or at least a spot that avoids the strongest afternoon sun. Direct sunlight will not only increase the internal temperature of each unit, but this also has the effect of making odours stronger and causing deodorizing chemicals to break down faster.

Shade keeps your tanks cool. Bacterial activity is slower and chemical additives last longer. For construction sites, this could mean placing your units beside a trailer, building, fence line, or other safe, shaded area.

For events, you have to think about both comfort and convenience. Guests are more likely to use units properly when they’re easy to find, accessible, and not baking all afternoon in the sun.

2. Increase Cleaning Frequency

During the summer, a tight servicing schedule is crucial. Portable toilets can maybe be pumped once per week in October, but those same toilets may need twice-weekly pumping in July. Heatwaves or periods of heavy use make this all the more likely. This is one of the most effective ways to prevent odor problems, hands down.

Getting your units pumped regularly removes waste before it has time to sit, heat up, and create stronger smells. It allows service technicians to refresh deodorizer levels, restock supplies, and make sure the units are functioning properly, too.

3. Keep the Door and Vents Clear

Airflow is so important, and portable toilets are designed with it in mind.

Most units include a ventilation pipe; this draws odours up and out of the holding tank. For this system to work properly, the door needs to stay closed and the vent needs to remain clear. If the door is being left open, airflow is disrupted. Instead of being pulled up through the vent pipe, odours will instead linger inside the unit, or escape directly into the surrounding area.

Check that the door spring and latch is working properly, this helps keep the door closed after every use. You should also make sure the roof vents are not blocked by tarps, branches, construction materials, signage, or other debris.

4. Monitor Chemical Additive Levels

You know that blue liquid you see at the bottom of porta potties? That’s the deodorizing liquid. But it does more than just mask the odour…it helps control smell, support waste breakdown, and keep the tank usable between service visits. In the summer, though, extreme heat can evaporate water faster and reduce the effectiveness of these chemicals.

If liquid levels drop too quickly, waste may not be properly covered or treated. This creates a less than pleasant experience for everyone using the unit, not to mention the increased rate of bacterial growth and stronger odours!

You’ll want to keep an eye on whether the tank looks unusually low, especially during hot stretches and after heavy use. While you don’t need to handle the chemicals, you should flag concerns for technicians during any site visits.

5. Educate Users on What Not to Trash

Food wrappers, bottles, wipes, gloves, rags, and other trash can interfere with how the deodorizing chemicals work. These items can also make pumping more difficult and may create unnecessary service issues.

Instead of leaving the decision up to tired, hungry, disgruntled workers, festival goers and event participants, make the right choice easy—place a separate trash can outside the porta potty (perhaps with signage).

The cleaner the tank stays, the better the service process works!

Summer Odor Prevention Checklist

Use this quick checklist to keep your units fresh during hot weather:

  • Placed in the shade?
  • Door springs working and keeping the door closed?
  • Vents clear of debris, tarps, and materials?
  • Trash can provided outside?
  • Extra service day scheduled for heatwaves?
