Position Overview:

Sanatec Environmental is seeking a highly skilled Maintenance/Shop Manager to oversee the lifecycle management of our fleet, which includes approximately 20 trucks, trailers, and a variety of specialized mobile and stationary equipment. This position is hands-on, requiring mechanical expertise and a commitment to ensuring operational safety, reliability, and compliance. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive and working collaboratively with Chief Administrator and Operations Manager, the Maintenance/Shop Manager will lead the maintenance operations while fostering a culture of safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet Management:

  • Oversee the maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of a diverse fleet, including:
    • Half-ton to 5-ton+ trucks.
    • Equipment such as vacuum systems, sewer jetting units, CCTV inspection equipment, Hibon and Fruitland pumps, and trailers.
  • Collaborate with the other managers on fleet procurement and lifecycle planning, aiming for a 10-year service life for equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of vehicle performance, maintenance schedules, and operator usage.

Maintenance and Repair:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive preventative maintenance program tailored to equipment types and operational demands.
  • Perform hands-on mechanical work, diagnosing and repairing equipment to minimize downtime.
  • Ensure fleet safety certifications, including CVIP compliance, are maintained.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Lead safety initiatives, ensuring compliance with Alberta Transport and Hours of Service regulations.
  • Train and mentor operators on best practices for safe and efficient equipment operation.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits to uphold safety standards.

Financial Oversight:

  • Track and report all costs related to repairs, preventative maintenance, downtime, and equipment replacement.
  • Collaborate with the other managers to develop and manage fleet budgets.

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Participate in hiring, performance reviews, and disciplinary actions for maintenance staff and operators in collaboration with the other managers.
  • Propose and implement tools or software to optimize fleet management after 3–6 months of employment.
  • Contribute to company safety meetings and develop strategies for improving equipment operations and driver performance.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Certified Heavy Duty Mechanic with a minimum of 3 years of experience (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience with Hibon and Fruitland pumps is a strong asset.
  • Valid Class 3 Driver’s License (or better) with a clean driving record.
  • Knowledge of CVIP certification, Alberta Transport regulations, and Hours of Service requirements.
  • Strong leadership skills, including experience mentoring and training team members.
  • Excellent organizational, decision-making, and communication skills.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and carry items exceeding 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, and emergency shifts as needed.
Schedule and Performance Reviews:
  • Standard work hours: Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week.
  • Performance reviews will occur at the 3-month, 6-month, and 1-year marks during the first year, then every six months thereafter.
